Pneumonia due to Omicron more pronounced among elderly

According to a recent study, older people with Omicron variant infection and a history of receiving inactivated vaccines are more likely to get pneumonia.

The dominant variation, omicron, which has at least 35 mutations in the spike protein, is less vulnerable to neutralizing antibodies produced by immunization. In elderly people and patients with chronic co-morbidities, the Omicron variation has been linked to elevated immune evasion concerns, and the likelihood of receiving complete vaccine coverage and a booster immunization was rather low.

Additionally, a comparative investigation found that pneumonia development was linked to smoking, being a man, and getting older. To stop pneumonia from forming, it is important to identify the risk factors for stratifying patients who are at a high risk for the development of pneumonia.

With a complete immunization schedule and booster shots, older individuals can be protected from pneumonia and serious COVID-19. In breakthrough cases with a history of inactivated vaccine injections, it′s crucial to look at the risk factors for pneumonia because pneumonia is the most common symptom of COVID-19.

Because the Omicron form is less virulent than the other variants of concern, it is less likely to afflict critically ill individuals. Omicron is linked to a decreased likelihood of hospitalization and a decreased incidence of pneumonia.

In patients with Omicron variant infection and a history of inactivated vaccine injections, the study found that old age was the sole independent risk factor for the development of pneumonia. Inactivated vaccinations, such as the COVID vaccines that are offered in India, do not contain any live viruses.
