The global health regulator, i.e., the WHO, has warned that cholera could be making a comeback after years of decline. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of WHO, stated that a worrying upsurge in instances of food and waterborne illness has been noticed across the globe. He added that cholera thrives on poverty and battle. However, it is now being turbo-charged by local weather changes. Excessive local weather events like floods, cyclones, and droughts require additional scaled-back entry to scrub water and create the perfect setting for cholera to unfold.

Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, the group medical director of Max Healthcare Group, noted that if left untreated, extreme dehydration can result in severe problems and even trigger loss of life. He added that cholera by no means has been eradicated from India, and it is true that the instances of the illness have gone up. He noted that in cities like Delhi, they have seen a clustering of cholera in July-August with some of the patients requiring hospitalization.

According to a survey published in the Worldwide Journal of Setting Analysis and Public Well-being (IJERP), cholera outbreaks are comparatively frequent in India. From 1997 to 2006, 68 outbreaks were reported, which further rose to 559 between 2009 and 2017. The survey was conducted by researchers from Okayama College, Japan, and Brainware College, Kolkata, where they stated that the degree of illness is grossly underreported in India. They added that regardless of the figures, cholera is an under-recognized disease condition in India.
