According to a study, women have a lower "normal" blood pressure range than men, which may be harmful to a woman’s health. For many years, 120 mmHg has been regarded as the upper limit of normal for systolic blood pressure in adults.

In the study, the research team analyzed the blood pressure measurements from four different communities. Overall, the study analyzed the data of over 27,000 participants, of which 54% of the participants were women.

The analysis of the measurements revealed that while the threshold of risk was 120 mmHg in men, 110 mmHg or lower was the threshold of risk in women. The investigators also found that the lower blood pressure threshold in women increased the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.

Dr. Susan Cheng, Associate Professor of Cardiology and Director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging in the Department of Cardiology at the Smidt Heart Institute, stated that the study provided clinical evidence that confirmed that women had distinct biology and physiology from males, as well as explain why women may be more prone to acquiring specific forms of cardiovascular disease at different times in their lives.

Based on the study results, she urged the medical community to reconsider blood pressure standards that do not consider gender variations.
