Osteoporosis is a common disease that comes with aging making bones weak and increasing the chances of fractures. Although both men and women are susceptible to the condition, postmenopausal or older women have a higher risk of acquiring osteoporosis.

One in three women over 50 may experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime, according to the latest data from the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Women account for 61% of osteoporosis fractures overall.

Bone is comprised of cells called osteoblasts which are broken down by osteoclasts. This cycle is regulated by oestrogen. Therefore, avoiding bone loss becomes a major issue for women during the menopausal process as oestrogen levels decline.

Even though osteoporosis is more likely to occur in older or postmenopausal women, early onset cannot be avoided. Other risk factors include an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, eating disorders, drinking too much alcohol, and smoking. Even though its rare, pregnancy-associated osteoporosis (PAO) can also occur and make bones brittle enough to break during pregnancy.

Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is an effective technique used to detect and confirm osteoporosis.

As prevention is always better than cure, several ways are available to prevent osteoporosis, lower the risk, and preserve bone health. It includes eating well, exercising, and taking prescribed drugs as directed. Vitamin D supplementation is beneficial in preventing and treating osteoporosis and enhancing bone density. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium from food and helps improve bone density. Exposure to sunlight is an important source to obtain Vitamin D.
