Insight into the brain during sleep unveils how memory is stored

A recent study that looked into the brain′s depths revealed that previous leanings were reactivated during sleep, improving memory.

The researchers implanted electrode probes in the brains of five patients who chose to participate in the study, and the electrical activity was recorded. In contrast to previous research that examined memory processing during sleep using EEG recordings made by electrodes on the head, the present study is the first to capture such electrical activity from inside the brain.

Recent data from brain electrodes placed in patients showed that object noises played while asleep boosted oscillatory activity, including increases in theta, sigma, and gamma EEG bands.

The outcomes revealed that the participant′s performance on a recall test the following morning had greatly improved. The mapped brain activity allowed the researchers to make substantial progress in their knowledge of how memory storage works by providing visual data identifying the brain′s regions engaged in the nightly memory storage process.

Despite the small number of patients examined, significant conclusions could be drawn because all five individuals showed comparable patterns of memory improvement and electrical activity.
