Risk is always involved in blood transfusion, which is a crucial and life-saving intervention in several circumstances, from trauma reaction to cancer therapy. Recently published studies have stated that blood transfusion is linked to unfavorable outcomes such as infections and greater rates of tumor recurrence in children with solid tumor oncology.

According to experts, it is well established that perioperative blood transfusion for solid tumor resection in adult patients is linked to unfavorable outcomes. However, because pediatric malignancies are relatively uncommon, research on them is more complicated and limited.

After studying data from more than 360 pediatric patients, researchers discovered that 194 children who underwent tumor excision over the 11-year study period required a blood transfusion within 30 days of the procedure.

Analysis of the available data showed that children who had a blood transfusion had greater rates of post-surgery infectious problems, a shorter disease-free interval, and higher rates of tumor recurrence. Even after taking into account pre-operative treatment as well, researchers still found that blood transfusions were linked to increased rates of infectious post-operative complications and shorter disease-free intervals.

Researchers also found no connection between the type of tumor and the frequency of infectious complications or the length of time between diseases. The study′s conclusions and goals are to keep encouraging and facilitating discussions and actions around patient care.
