A study published in the journal Heart revealed that COVID heightened the risk of poor cardiovascular health and death, particularly among those who required hospital admission due to severe infection. The study conducted by the largest biobank in the UK showed that several cardiovascular diseases such as atrial fibrillation, VTE (blood clot in a vein), pericarditis, and death from any cause occurred within the first 30 days of infection.

In the study, the researchers enrolled 53,613 UK Biobank participants, 17,871 of whom were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection between March 2020 and March 2021. The observational study′s findings revealed that out of 17,871 COVID-19 cases, 2,701 participants required hospital admission, while another 866 were admitted to hospital for another condition.

Hence, when these findings were compared with their counterparts, it was seen that COVID-infected participants were 118 times more likely to die than those who did not need hospital treatment. Similarly, participants who were admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 as a secondary diagnosis were 64 times more likely to die.
