According to neurologists, stroke patients are not seeking treatment for speech and cognitive deficits that occur after a stroke because of a lack of awareness and the high cost of care.

Dr. Suryanarayana Sharma, senior consultant neurologist and stroke specialist at Apollo Hospital Bannerghatta Road, said that speech problems after a stroke should be recognized. It could manifest as dysarthria, aphasia, trouble understanding others, and a lack of fluency. Patients may also express frustration at their incapacity to name objects and repeat spoken words and sentences.

Dr. Sharma continued by saying that some studies have indicated that 30 and 60% of individuals experience speech and swallowing difficulties following a stroke. But, only 25–30% of stroke patients who require speech therapy choose it.

Doctors have seen that most patients prioritize physical therapy, which is excessively expensive. According to physicians, recovery for those who have suffered a severe stroke may take several years. The patient′s perseverance during the difficult and discouraging rehabilitation phase is one factor that affects the length of recovery.

Experts stated rehabilitation is frequently limited to physiotherapy even though speech and cognitive treatment is essential for everyone who has experienced a significant stroke. The issue is made worse because there arent enough speech therapists working in the citys hospitals and districts. Additionally, the financial load is preventing some people from seeking counselling. They proposed that government assistance with complete rehabilitation for stroke survivors could set many people on the path to recovery.
