An Artificial Intelligence (AI) model was created by a research team at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati to forecast how a persons thigh bone fractures will heal following surgery.

The model can be used to lessen the financial burden on individuals who receive treatment for thigh fractures and the amount of time and suffering required for healing. It determines if a fracture fixation would be effective for a specific patient by forecasting the healing outcomes based on individual physiologies and the kind of fracture.

Experts stated that AI has enormous potential for comprehending and forecasting complicated biological events, and as a result, it can play a significant role in applications in the health sciences. The research team combined mathematical analysis with the AI tool Fuzzy Logic to comprehend how fractures heal after undergoing various treatments. To analyze the effectiveness of each procedure for treating fractures, the team also looked at the impact of various screw fixation mechanisms. The models healing predictions and experimental observations were in good agreement, demonstrating the models validity.

The AI tool considers several clinical phenomena, including smoking, diabetes, and other biological and patient-specific characteristics. The concept can also be applied to animal fractures, which resemble human patient fractures in several ways and physiologically. The findings were published in the journal PLoS One.
