According to a pilot study published in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, neurofeedback can help address the cognitive deficits of cancer patients experiencing "chemo brain." The cognitive deficits in people experiencing "chemo brain" include a myriad of symptoms like problems with memory, concentration, and organization, as well as other symptoms like trouble sleeping and emotional difficulties.

In the study, 9 female breast cancer patients were enrolled. These patients, between the ages of 21 to 65 years, had completed chemotherapy at least one year earlier and complained of debilitating symptoms of chemo brain that disrupted their work and personal lives.

In the study, each participant received neurocognitive and psychological tests as well as a quantitative EEG to measure brain wave frequencies that could be compared to normative data before starting the training session.

The pre-training quantitative EEGs show that each study participant had abnormal brain wave activity compared to healthy adult brains. After receiving the 18 training sessions, scheduled for 30 minutes each over six weeks, the quantitative EEGs showed that brain wave frequencies had significantly normalized in 7 of the 9 study participants.
