The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its COVID-19 guidance for healthcare workers based on symptoms, immune status, and test results. It recommends that-

  • Healthcare workers with COVID-19 infection but asymptomatic and not immunocompromised can resume work after seven days with a negative test in the last 48 hours or ten days without test results. Those infected with COVID-19 but asymptomatic and have negative test results on day five can resume work seven days after first being sick. However, if they test positive on day five to seven, they must wait until ten days after first being sick to return to the workplace.
  • Healthcare workers who have taken all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including a booster, can continue to work even after a high-risk exposure. But they must undergo testing 24 hours and again five to seven days after exposure.

These guidelines are not solely for the healthcare workforce and may be revised to continue to protect both healthcare workers and patients following the accumulation of additional data on the present COVID-19 variant scenario.

The CDC has also revised its guidance for the public. On Dec. 27, the agency released new recommendations for asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.

It recommends an isolation period of five days for people who test positive for COVID-19 but are asymptomatic. The change was backed by the “science demonstrating that most of the SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the [one to two] days before the onset of symptoms and the [two to three] days after”.
