According to new findings from a recent trial data conducted by Pfizer, its vaccine given to expectant mothers during their pregnancy protects newborns in their first months against the severe consequences of Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The MATISSE study included 7,400 pregnant women from 18 different countries. The vaccination was administered to recipients between the last two weeks of the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. All of the study participants′ pregnancies and the first six months following childbirth were monitored for safety. To evaluate the safety and efficacy, the infants were monitored for at least a year, and more than half of them were observed for two years.

The findings demonstrated that the vaccine significantly reduced the risk of serious disease during the first 90 days of life, with considerable protection persisting through 6 months of age.

Experts stated that by year′s end, Pfizer will apply for FDA clearance, and this is a significant step for defending infants against RSV and enhancing general lung health.
