According to a study published in Frontiers in Immunology, infants whose mothers test positive for Covid-19 are less likely to experience severe symptoms than their parents.

The study examined 46 pairs of Covid-positive mothers and their infants for two months after maternal infection for surveys and antibody findings. Infants were included in the trial within days, often hours, of having positive PCR test results and were at least one month old. The researchers also included 26 moms as the control without any known Covid exposures or symptoms and a comparative group of 11 Covid-negative mothers who tested negative after exposure or symptoms.

Overall, it was seen that nearly half of the children of women who tested positive for Covid-19 showed symptoms or the presence of antibodies. The rate of infection and developing symptoms were comparable to those of the other children in the home, although they were lower than those of the fathers and other adults. Including one infant who tested PCR positive, none of the COVID-negative women or their infants had antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. None of the infants in the control groups moms exhibited antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, which likely indicated a prior infection they were unaware of.

The probability of infection among infants of Covid-positive mothers was not correlated with infant age or maternal symptoms, although households with more infected relatives were more likely to have infants who tested positive.

In the study, almost all infants were exclusively breastfed. In a prior study, the researchers found that there was no SARS-CoV-2 virus in any of the milk taken from the moms who were infected, but the majority of the milk samples still carried antibodies even up to two months after infection

Overall, the risks to Covid-19 exposed infants in this study were minimal. The findings suggest that infected mothers and other baby caregivers should continue nursing, providing routine baby care and breastfeeding.
