Ramgarh, Ranchi: In an extremely rare case, a 21-day-old baby was found carrying eight fetuses in her womb. Doctors from a private hospital called it the first such case in the world where an infant was carrying so many fetuses.

The doctors stated that the condition is called "fetus-in-fetus." In medical terminology, "fetus-in-fetus" (FIF) is a rare condition in which one malformed vertebrate fetus is enclosed within the body of its twin. The doctors from the city-based private hospital operated on the child on November 1, 2022. They stated that the operation was a success and that the newborn is recuperating well.

On Thursday, Dr. Mohammed Imran, the pediatric surgeon, claimed that FIF occurs in one in every five live births. International medical journals have recorded one fetus in most of the FIF cases.
