A study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology showed reassuring data on the risk of kidney disease relapse after COVID vaccination. The study also showed that the second or third dose of the vaccine was associated with a "higher relative risk but a low absolute increased risk" of glomerular disease relapse.

In a population-level study, 1,105 adults with stable glomerular disease were enrolled. The findings of the study showed that the first dose of a vaccine was not associated with any risk of the disease relapsing. However, the subsequent vaccine doses were associated with an increased risk by two times.

Additionally, the increase in absolute risk associated with vaccination was low, i.e., between the range of 1–5% depending on the type of glomerular disease. The researchers also stated that most vaccine-associated disease flares were mild, with approximately 1 in 5 people needing any change in treatment.

The study author noted that these study results indicate that although COVID-19 vaccines may be associated with a small increase in the risk of causing a flare of glomerular disease, the well-established benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Hence, patients with glomerular diseases should be encouraged to get regular COVID-19 vaccinations.
