Therapeutic lifestyle prescription includes dietary modifications, physical activity/exercise, weight loss, smoking, tobacco cessation, alcohol and stress management.

  • Mediterranean diet is high in fruits, vegetables, bread and other forms of cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts, seeds and olive oil.
  • Indo-Mediterranean diet includes lots of fruits, vegetables; whole grains like unpolished rice, whole wheat and millets; fatty fish for nonvegetarians; fenugreek seeds, mustard seeds, flax seeds, soybean oil, mustard oil for vegetarians; nuts to work as a cardioprotective diet.
  • Markedly reduce the incidence of heart failure as well as cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Choose your oil carefully!
  • There is no ideal oil
  • A balanced combination of oils

  • Intermittent fasting and metabolic switching
  • Glucose and fatty acids are the primary sources of energy for cells. After meals, glucose is used for energy, and fat is stored in adipose tissue as TG. During periods of fasting, TG is broken down to fatty acids and glycerol, which are used for energy. The liver converts fatty acids to ketone bodies, which provide a major source of energy for many tissues, especially the brain, during fasting. In the fed state, blood levels of ketone bodies are low, and in humans, they rise within 8 to 12 hours after the onset of fasting.
  • Cigarette smoking is a strong risk factor for MI, peripheral artery disease and CVA:
  • Smoking accelerates coronary plaque development and may lead to plaque rupture
  • Smoking increases TC, lowers HDL-C and raises LDL-C
  • Cigarette smoking cessation increases serum levels of HDL-C.
  • A meta-analysis has revealed the clinically important effects of yoga on most biological CVD risk factors. Yoga can be considered an ancillary intervention for the general population and patients with an increased risk of CVD
