New Delhi: Dr. K. K. Verma, head of the dermatology department at AIIMS, stated that the skin is a protective layer of the body and a compromised barrier (the outermost skin layer) can have negative effects on the skin’s health. Amid the increasing levels of air pollution in the national capital, the number of people suffering from skin-related allergies, rashes, and premature aging has multiplied exponentially.

Dr. Verma explained that prolonged inhalation of particulate matter, nitrous oxide, and ozone not only reduces the life span but also worsens conditions like eczema, itching, and dermatitis. He also stated that premature aging can now be seen in the younger generation in their 40s as a result of long-term exposure.

Dr. D. M. Mahajan, senior consultant of dermatology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, stated that particulate matter gets absorbed into the system through the hair roots and decreases the functioning of the whole body. Also, air pollutants increase the effect of ultraviolet rays, causing the degradation of collagen and elastic fibers that are essential for keeping skin young and resulting in a lot of wrinkles, lines, and sagging of the skin.

Dr. Kabir Sardana, a professor in the dermatology department at RML Hospital, noted that several studies have shown that air pollutants result in a chemical reaction that releases oxygen radicals, causing inflammatory damage to the skin. However, there are oral drugs, including natural agents like turmeric, giloe, or tulsi, whose antioxidant properties can be beneficial in combating skin problems if taken appropriately for a particular duration.
