The research, presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Conference and published in The Novel England Journal of Medicine, demonstrates how a new medication called Baxdrostat can drastically lower blood pressure in patients for whom other treatments have failed.

In a multi-centered phase 2 clinical trial called BrigHTN, researchers administered Baxdrostat at doses of 2, 1, or 0.5 mg daily for 12 weeks to 248 patients with treatment-resistant hypertension (tRH) and average blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg. All participants who were randomly assigned to receive the new medicine also received their regular blood pressure medication.

Researchers observed a decrease in blood pressure after treatment. Baxdrostats highest dose of 2 mg resulted in a systolic blood pressure reduction of more than 20 points, or 11 points less than the placebo control group. Also, they noted that blood pressure and aldosterone secretion lowered with increasing doses.

The researchers thus concluded that Baxdrostat inhibits aldosterone synthase, a crucial enzyme in the production of aldosterone, which lowers blood pressure in participants with treatment-resistant hypertension and thus supports the hypothesis that the hormone aldosterone may be responsible for some cases of treatment-resistant hypertension.
