In a study published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics, researchers from the University of Missouri showed that common vitamin B3 dietary supplements can increase the risk of serious diseases, including developing cancer.

The new study warns against arbitrary usage. On the other hand, some of the previously conducted studies have advocated the benefits of commercial dietary supplements like nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3, for cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological health.

In the study, the researchers used bioluminescent imaging technology to compare and examine how much NR was present in cancer cells, T cells, and healthy tissues. The imaging tests revealed a high level of NR in the cancer cells compared to T cells and healthy cells.

The researchers explained that NR is a well-known supplement used to increase cellular energy levels. The cancer cells use that energy to manage their increased metabolism. Hence, the consumption of NR and other vitamin B3 supplements increases the risk of developing triple-negative breast cancer, including cancer metastasis and its spread to the brain.
