A recent study described risk variables that can increase a person′s likelihood of developing diabetes if they have chronic pancreatitis, a continuing pancreatic inflammatory disease.

For this investigation, researchers gathered data from 645 participants in the Prospective Evaluation of Chronic Pancreatitis for Epidemiologic and Translational Studies (PROCEED) who had chronic pancreatitis. 276 participants between the ages of 18 and 75 in PROCEED had diabetes.

The researchers assessed risk variables for Type 2 diabetes, such as alcohol and cigarette use, after a diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. It was found that men, overweight or obese people, smokers, and older people were more likely to develop diabetes than women, persons of normal weight, non-smokers, and younger people. Exocrine pancreatic dysfunction, a different disorder, also increases people′s risk factors.

Experts stated that more studies are needed to examine how genetics, insulin, and hormone levels may put patients with chronic pancreatitis at risk for diabetes.
