Chennai: Following the death of a 17-year-old girl who suffered a ligament tear, two doctors at the Government Peripheral Hospital, Periyar Nagar, from the department of orthopedics were accused of medical negligence.

The patient was admitted for treatment of a ligament tear, where she underwent surgery. However, the compression bandage that was used to control the bleeding caused issues with blood flow to her leg. As a result, the girl had to undergo amputation at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

State Health Minister, Mr. MA Subramanian, stated that the prolonged pressure caused by a compression bandage affected blood flow. This should have been noticed by the doctors. He added that they should take responsibility for their negligence. He added that after discussing the case with the Health Secretary and Director of Medical Education, it was decided to transfer the two doctors and initiate departmental action.
