On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to hear a slew of petitions, including one seeking action to impose a two-child limit in order to control the rising population. The bench of justices S. K. Kaul and A. S. Oka observed that population is not something that stops one fine day.

They also cited some of the media reports and stated that despite the rise in births, the population is also stabilizing. Hence, they added, it is not an issue where the court should interfere.

The petition was filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. In his petition, he challenged an order of the Delhi High Court dismissing a plea seeking certain steps, including a two-child norm, to control the rising population.
