According to a study published in the journal Neurology, patients who recovered from COVID-19 are 55% more likely to develop seizures or epilepsy within six months of recovering from the disease than those who contracted influenza. The study also revealed that the risk of seizure was higher among children in comparison to adults.

In the study, more than 1 lakh participants were enrolled in both the COVID-19 group and the influenza group. The findings of the study revealed that new cases of epilepsy or seizures were observed in 0.94% of the people who had COVID-19 in comparison to 0.60% of those who had influenza.

The researchers from the University of Oxford stated that the risk of developing seizures or epilepsy was observed in less than 1% of the COVID-19-infected population. However, they added that given the large number of people who have contracted COVID globally, this could lead to a large number of seizure and epilepsy cases.
