Formulating and Delivering Epidermal Growth Factors in Skin Care: Challenges and Effective Routes

Epidermal growth factors (EGF) are morphogenetic proteins crucial for instructing cell behavior. They have many speculated applications within regenerative medicine and have already demonstrated promising results in skincare treatments.

We know many growth factors that possess skin anti-aging benefits and have the potential to resolve scarring, acne and other skin disorders. Incorporating these biologics into skincare formulations is challenged by low transdermal delivery efficacy, intricate material interactions and protein instability – particularly within common cosmetic emulsions.

A review by Eskens O and Amin S highlights the growth factor product formulation′s impact on stability and synergy. Currently, we have a lesser understanding of growth factor formulating techniques in cosmetic products, and the performance of other protein structures is a good point of reference.

The review also examines emerging drug delivery systems to overcome the challenges of topical growth factor treatment. It underlines the importance of considering the coaction and durability of all components in a formulation simultaneously: active ingredients, product format and delivery vehicle, in order to engineer an optimal cosmeceutical product.

The study further underscores the role of manufacturing stressors and storage conditions on EGF integrity, which we should carefully consider. We can further optimize their therapeutic efficacy by bioengineering and synergistic formulation selections. Furthermore, topical drug delivery vehicles furnish immobilization and protective encapsulation. EGF cargo can be delivered locally and sustainably with nanoparticulate systems that cross the stratum corneum.

More research into EGF interactions and physical characteristics in cosmetic formulations is essential for constructing products that are long-lasting and user-friendly in the future.
