On Thursday, all heads of anatomy departments of state-run medical colleges deliberated on the regulations. At present, kin could donate a body between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. When the new policies come into effect, the period during which families of the deceased can donate a body to any state-run medical college is likely to be expanded by seven hours.

The hours will be extended from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. As per the new regulation, all medical colleges will have a nodal officer to coordinate donations. They will have a WhatsApp group for coordination so that in case a medical college does not have the space to take in the body, the family can be directed to the college that does.

In the meeting, it was decided that if a family comes after 9 p.m., the body must be stored in a mortuary, and procedures should be completed the next day. Additionally, the Aadhar card and passport will be the only valid ID proof for proceeding with the body donation procedure. In the case of foreign nationals, the formalities will be done through the country’s embassy or office in India.
