The article published in the Microbiology Spectrum stated that previous research has shown direct connections between dental health and widespread illnesses like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. In the study conducted by the researchers at Karolinska Institutet, they determined the specific bacteria present in infected oral and maxillofacial areas.

The study was conducted using 1,014 samples, of which 469 were women and 545 were men. In the study, a mass-spectrometric method called MALDI-TOF was used to rapidly determine the different bacteria in a sample. According to the researchers, this technology is rarely used in dental care. They added that the finding is not only important to dental medicine but can also provide a deeper picture of the role of dental infection in patients with underlying diseases.

The findings of the study revealed that the most common bacterial phyla amongst the samples were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Similarly, the most common genera were Streptococcus spp., Prevotella spp., and Staphylococcus spp.
