The study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association revealed that vaping increases the risk of caries. This connection warns that this once-seemingly benign behavior may be quite harmful.

Researchers evaluated the relationship between vaping/e-cigarette use and a higher risk of developing cavities. More than 13,000 patients older than 16 who had treatment at dental clinics between 2019 and 2022 were included in the studies. They found a statistically significant difference in the risk levels of dental caries between the e-cigarette/vaping group and the control group, even though most patients claimed not to use vapes. Approximately 79% of the vaping patients and only roughly 60% of the control group were classified as having a high caries risk.

E-cigarettes could increase the risk of cavities because of the presence of sugary content and viscosity of vaping liquid, which, when aerosolized and breathed through the mouth, clings to the teeth. Researchers suggest that dentists regularly inquire about e-cigarette use as part of a patients medical history. Pediatric dentists who treat teenagers are included in this since, in 2021, 7.6% of middle- and high-school students reported using e-cigarettes, according to the FDA/CDC.

Additionally, the researchers recommend that patients who use e-cigarettes be considered a "more stringent caries management approach," which may include prescription-strength fluoridated toothpaste and rinse, in-office fluoride applications, and more frequent checks than twice yearly.
