Recent research presented at the British Thoracic Society meeting and published in the journal Thorax revealed that in the UK after Covid-19 restrictions were eased, adults with asthma suffered a roughly doubled risk of having a severe asthma attack.

After the restrictions were relaxed, there was a decrease in face masks and increased social interaction, which led to an increased risk of acute respiratory illnesses like COVID-19. Additionally, the study discovered that Covid-19 was not substantially more likely to cause asthma attacks than other respiratory infections.

Data from 2,312 people with asthma who took part in the COVIDENCE UK trial at Queen Mary between November 2020 and April 2022 were evaluated for the study. Monthly online surveys were used to gather information on face-covering usage, social interaction, and asthma symptoms. Results showed a more than double increase in the percentage of severe asthma attacks. The episodes increased from 1.7% in the preceding month in April 2021 to 3.7% in January 2022.

Experts stated that the findings suggest that some components of the public health measures implemented during the pandemic, such as wearing facemasks, may help lower respiratory infections.
