Metabolites are produced or utilized when the body breaks down food, medications, or chemicals during metabolism. According to a recent study, changes in metabolite levels have been linked to migraine.

Migraine treatments are burdensome and costly, but recently uncovered genetic factors by QUT researchers may pave the road for brand-new treatments and preventative medications.

Experts stated that they had identified causal genetic links to three blood metabolite levels that increase migraine risk. Lower levels of DHA, higher levels of LPE (20:4), and lower levels of uncharacterized metabolite named X-11315.

Migraine risk is connected to inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and brain illnesses, including depression, all associated with lower amounts of DHA. DHA is an omega-3 with a very long chain that guards against migraines. LPE (20:4) was a chemical substance that prevented the formation of an anti-inflammatory molecule known as anandamide. If LPE (20:4) is managed to allow the creation of more anandamide to reduce inflammation, this could potentially prevent migraine. Furthermore, the incidence of migraine was similarly raised by lower blood levels of the third metabolite, X-11315.

Future studies and clinical trials may focus on these genetic connections to develop and test drugs that affect metabolite levels and prevent migraines.
