According to a study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, deaths in the younger population increased in 2021. The study revealed that this finding was in contrast to the trend observed in the early phase of the pandemic, where the number of deaths was higher among older adults.

In the study, the researchers quantified this downward age shift in COVID-19 deaths using "Years of Life Lost" (YLL) rather than mortality. The findings of the study revealed that, despite 20.8% fewer COVID deaths in 2021 in comparison to 2020, YLL increased by 7.4%. The authors of the study noted that in the early phase of the pandemic, age and pre-existing conditions played a major role in developing public health advice.

They explained that by early 2021, the COVID-19 landscape saw a positive shift as vaccines became available, treatments advanced, and people′s behaviors changed. In 2020, COVID death rates were high among the older population, but the same population exhibited a relatively higher vaccination rate and adherence to nonpharmaceutical interventions in 2021.

As a result, such systemic and behavioral changes in response to COVID-19 impacted mortality rates and determined which age groups were at higher risk.
