According to the study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, all types of alcoholic beverages, including wine, increase cancer risk. To date, seven types of cancer have been linked to alcohol consumption, including cancers of the breast, mouth, and colon.

The research team found that awareness of the alcohol-cancer link was highest for liquor, with 31.2% of adults aware of the risk, followed by beer (24.9%) and wine (20.3%). They also found that 10% of the adults thought that wine decreased cancer risk, while 2.2% and 1.7% thought that beer and liquor decreased the risk of cancer, respectively. On the other hand, more than 50% of adults reported that they did not know how these beverages affected cancer risk.

The researchers concluded that the findings of the study underscored the need to develop interventions for educating the public about the cancer risks of alcohol use. They added that educating the public about how alcohol increases cancer risk will not only empower consumers to make more informed decisions but may also prevent and reduce excessive alcohol use as well as cancer morbidity and mortality.
