On Sunday, experts stated that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the fifth most disabling psychiatric condition, but not many people seek treatment for it. According to the WHO, only about 35% to 40% of people suffering from the disorder seek therapy; however, the number of people who receive evidence-based treatment for the disorder is less than 10%.

According to Dr. Nayamat Bawa, Head Psychologist at ePsyClinic, sometimes diagnosing the obsessive-compulsive disorder is difficult because its symptoms are similar to those of other mental health illnesses.

Dr. Neelesh Tiwari, a neuropsychiatrist at the World Brain Centre Hospital in Delhi, stated that a lack of awareness and understanding of the disorder is the major reason why not many people seek treatment for OCD. He stated that treatment strategies can help patients with OCD regain control over symptoms, functioning, and quality of life. In mild cases, therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy are sufficient. In more severe cases, medication is prescribed. Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to help with relieving anxiety.

Similarly, Dr. Bhavna Barmi, Senior Psychologist at Fortis Escorts Health Institute stated that the two primary therapies for OCD are psychological treatment and medication. She explained that cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy with its component known as exposure and response prevention. It was found helpful by many people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Additionally, there are psychiatric medications that can assist in the management of OCD symptoms such as obsessions and compulsions.
