According to a study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases (AJKD), every 1-year increase in retinal age is equivalent to a 10% higher risk of incident kidney failure. The study was conducted over a period of 11 years and included more than 35,000 participants from the UK.

The changes in the retinal age were determined by changes in the retinal microvasculature. The researchers claimed that there is a pressing need to identify early predictive biomarkers of kidney failure, given its substantial morbidity and mortality. They added that several studies have associated aging biomarkers with kidney failure, but their clinical application has been challenging.

In the study, the researchers developed and validated a biomarker of aging based on fundus images. They linked the retinal age gap with the future risk of kidney failure. They suggested that this non-invasive, aging biomarker can assist in the identification of people at elevated risk for kidney failure.
