A genetic test called Omega TB (OTB) has been launched by healthcare solutions provider LifeCell in collaboration with the genomics-based health tech startup HaystackAnalytics. The partnership represents LifeCells entry into the market for genetic testing for people with tuberculosis.

The HaystackAnalytics-created genome-sequencing test intends to address the impending problem of drug resistance. By offering a prompt, inexpensive, and precise diagnosis, the test also aids in treating TB and its prevention.

Results from the limited information-providing molecular and culture tests can take up to a week. All diagnostic data on TB infections are identified by the single test known as ΩTB. Results are available approximately ten to twelve days after the test screens resistance to the 18 listed antibiotics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the ΩTB in June at the BIRAC′s Biotech Startup Expo 2022 in New Delhi.

Mayur Abhaya, Managing Director & CEO of LifeCell India said that introducing this thorough genetic analysis and expert-based testing would revolutionize TB testing, diagnosis and transform the care and treatment services for TB patients.

Dr. Anirvan Chatterjee, Co-Founder, and CEO of HaystackAnalytics stated that leading emerging nations like the UK have long since switched to TB WGS (Whole Genome Sequencing). He also had the chance to create the test while attending Oxford University. He was sure that the test would help doctors treat patients more effectively.

Low-frequency resistance mutations and heterogeneous resistance can be found with better sensitivity using LifeCell′s WGS in conjunction with Haystack Analytics. Additionally, WGS is renowned for identifying anti-TB drugs resistant phenotypes and creating the best, tailored treatment plans, improving treatment success in areas where tuberculosis is widespread. Furthermore, as phenotypic approaches may be less trustworthy, genotypic approaches are also favoured for antibiotics like EMB and PZA.
