Study Reveals that Green Vegetables are Good for Blood Vessel Health

According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, older women who consume more cruciferous green vegetables, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage, have a reduced risk of developing severe blood vessel damage.

 

The research team from the University of Western Australia used the data of 684 older women who were recruited in 1998 for their study. They found that people who consume a diet comprising more cruciferous vegetables have a lower chance of having an extensive buildup of calcium in their aorta, a key marker for structural blood vessel disease.

 

They also found that a higher intake of green vegetables reduced the risk of developing clinical cardiovascular disease events, such as a heart attack or stroke. They explained that vitamin K, which is abundant in cruciferous vegetables, inhibits the calcification process in blood vessels.

 

Additionally, the researchers found that women who consumed more than 45 grams of cruciferous vegetables every day were 46% less likely to have an extensive build-up of calcium in their aorta in comparison to those consuming little to no cruciferous vegetables every day.
