A recommendation made by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK may make it possible for young people with diabetes (Juvenile diabetes or type I diabetes ) there to receive National Health Service (NHS) coverage for an artificial pancreas. Though specific private clinics in India have access to this pricey device, numerous institutions are working to develop more affordable alternatives. According to NICE guidelines, the HbA1c level should be 6.5% or lower to reduce the possibility of long-term complications from diabetes.

The device, which analyses blood glucose, calculates the required amount of insulin and then pumps that precise amount into the bloodstream, may soon be covered for UK patients.

The artificial version includes a sensor, a calculation that determines the quantity of insulin required, a pump, and other components. With the use of these devices, people with type 1 diabetes can more easily maintain a normal blood glucose level during the entire day.

Artificial pancreas therapy for Type I diabetes is still in its initial phase in India. The first patient in the nation to receive an artificial pancreas through a do-it-yourself procedure (DIYAP) was documented by specialists in 2021. They said the patient had "greater time-in-range, barely any time spent in hypoglycemia, and superior quality of life." The DIYAP device consists of an insulin pump (typically reused from the patient′s present pump) and a continuous glucose monitor. To determine how much insulin is required, an algorithm is used.

Meanwhile, a pilot research was carried out last year as part of a project being worked on by the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) in Bengaluru to create such a device for Indian patients.
