According to a study published in the journal BMJ, most symptoms of long-term COVID caused by a mild COVID-19 infection last for several months but recover to normal within a year. The study revealed that vaccinated people were at a lower risk of developing breathing difficulties in comparison to unvaccinated people.

In this study, the researchers compared the health of uninfected individuals with that of those who had recovered from mild COVID-19 for a year after infection. They used the electronic data of patients from a hospital in Israel where 2 million people were tested for COVID infection.

The findings of the study showed that COVID-19 infection was significantly associated with increased risks of loss of smell and taste, concentration problems, memory impairment, breathing difficulties, weakness, palpitations, streptococcal tonsillitis, and dizziness. The study showed that symptoms of COVID infections, such as hair loss, chest pain, cough, muscle aches, pains, and respiratory disorders, were resolved in the late period.

The researchers also observed that people with mild infections were 4.5 and 3 times more likely to experience loss of smell and taste in the early period and late period of infection, respectively, in comparison to non-infected people.

Additionally, the study showed that breathing difficulties were the most common symptom that appeared in five out of the six age groups. But it only persisted in the age groups of 19–40, 41–60, and over 60 for over a year. Similarly, weakness appeared in four of the six age groups and was persistent in the late phase only for the people in the age groups of 19–40 and 41–60.
