Study reveals Hybrid Covid immunity provides more protection than infection only

Hybrid immunity, which results from a prior infection combined with vaccination, provides "greater amplitude and duration" of protection against severe Covid-19 than an infection alone, according to a meta-analysis published in "Lancet Infectious Diseases." Additionally, it claims that hybrid immunity may aid in extending the time until a booster dose is required, particularly in the case of Omicron strains that frequently cause breakthrough infections.

The study is based on an evaluation of 15 studies on hybrid immunity and 11 other studies on the protective effect of prior SARS-CoV-2 (Covid) infection. The study demonstrates that, in 97.4% of patients, hybrid immunity combined with primary vaccination doses was beneficial in preventing severe illness and hospital admission for up to 12 months.

At 12 months, only hybrid immunity was 41.8% effective against re-infection, while the previous infection was 74.6 % effective against severe disease and hospital admission. The protection from re-infection for all types of immunity fell to 24.7% after a year.

The study concluded that hybrid immunity with more vaccination doses offers greater protection and recommends conducting booster campaigns anytime an increase in infections is anticipated.
