According to a preliminary study, an app called FAST.AI can help in accurately diagnosing strokes. This can help lessen the long-term effects of a stroke and increase the likelihood that the patient will make a full recovery.

FAST. AI is a completely automated smartphone software for the detection of severe strokes that uses machine learning algorithms to identify speech abnormalities, arm weakness, facial asymmetry, etc.

The smartphone programme is designed to analyse 68 facial landmarks using a facial video of the patient, sensors that track arm movement and orientation, and voice recordings that listen for speech variations. Early findings of the study showed that the app reliably detected acute stroke symptoms as accurately as a neurologist.

By testing approximately 270 patients with an acute stroke diagnosis within 72 hours of hospital admission at four significant urban stroke centres between July 2021 and July 2022, researchers verified FAST.AI′s performance.

Neurologists who assessed the patients tested the app and compared the FAST.AI results with their observations in the clinical setting. According to the analysis, almost 100% of patients had their facial asymmetries caused by strokes correctly identified by the smartphone app. The app correctly identified arm weakness in more than two-thirds of the cases.
