On Monday, the newly appointed chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that governments should spend money on vaccinations for every strain of influenza virus that exists in the animal kingdom as a precaution in the event of a human outbreak.

In the past year, avian flu outbreaks have caused historic losses of poultry in nations ranging from the United States and Britain to France and Japan. Earlier this month, the WHO stated that the recent spread of H5N1, also known as bird flu, needed to be monitored even though the risk of transmission to mammals was low.

Dr. Jeremy Farrar, the incoming WHO chief scientist, stated that the pharmaceutical industry should at least conduct some clinical trials for all influenza strains so that global manufacturing does not have to start from scratch if vaccination is required to control any outbreak.
