Acute respiratory infection claims three lives in Kolkata

Kolkata witnessed the death of three kids from acute respiratory infections (ARI) between Saturday and Sunday. Two of the victims were newborns in the Dr. BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences in Phoolbagan, and the third was a toddler at the Medical College Hospital. 

 

Two unconfirmed casualties′ viral panel test outcomes are awaited. 

 

The most important information is that a nine-month-old boy from Howrah′s Udaynaraynpur died on Saturday and tested positive for the adenovirus. He has admitted to the Phoolbagan Hospital, on February 2 and was later released on February 19. But his parents had to bring him back due to persistent episodes of respiratory distress and wheezing.

 

At the same Phoolbagan hospital, Dr. BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences, an eight-month-old baby from Baduria of North 24 Parganas also passed away on Sunday morning with ARI. He was taken to the hospital with ARI on February 20.

 

Rudrik Sarkar, age one and a half, was the third acute respiratory infection (ARI) victim. He was referred from the College of Medicine and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital, Kalyani, a few days ago and passed away on Sunday morning. His death certificate listed sepsis and bronchopneumonia as the causes of death.

 

Health officials expressed their deep concern and said it was very distressing that they could not supply a PICU bed because all available beds were already occupied. Many of the children with viral infections referred from other hospitals, especially from the districts, are overflowing the hospitals PICU.
