Psoriasis is characterized as a chronic, systemic, immune-mediated disease showing prominent skin and joint manifestations, which is associated with several comorbidities. The past few decades have witnessed advances in the knowledge of psoriasis pathogenesis which has caused the development of highly effective targeted biologic therapies, transforming the treatment landscape of psoriasis.

Bimekizumab, a humanized antibody, selectively binds and neutralizes the biologic functions of interleukin (IL)-17A and IL-17F. The present study discusses the current knowledge about bimekizumab in psoriasis treatment. The results of the phase 3 studies (BE VIVID, BE READY, BE RADIANT, BE SURE) confirm the high levels of efficacy of bimekizumab, proposed in previous studies, and demonstrate superior efficacy over adalimumab, ustekinumab and secukinumab in direct comparative studies. All phase 3 trials also observed well tolerance and a safety profile similar to the other biologic drugs tested (except for a higher frequency of oral candidiasis) of bimekizumab.

The existing literature favors the dual inhibition of IL-17A and IL-17F as a highly effective therapeutic option for treating psoriasis, both for naïve patients and those resistant to previous biologic treatments.
