According to a study published in Current Biology, gliomas, a very uncommon but frequently aggressive kind of brain tumor, can develop as a result of head trauma. The study showed that patients who have sustained a head injury are roughly four times more likely to acquire brain cancer in later life than those who have not.

The researchers explained that this situation is brought on by mutations in certain genes and brain inflammation induced by acute injury. The risk is further increased by the natural process of aging, which facilitates and helps astrocytes induce cancer.

According to researchers at the University College London, it is crucial to remember that the chance of acquiring brain cancer is generally low—less than 1% over a lifetime. They explained that in the brains of young individuals, a reduced risk of basal inflammation keeps the mutations in check even after a serious brain injury. However, inflammation in the brain increases with age, especially at the site of the earlier injury.

The researchers concluded that genetic abnormalities combined with brain tissue inflammation can alter cell behavior and increase the overall likelihood of developing cancer.
