According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, a supervised, eight-week exercise programme was found to be more beneficial for long-term COVID patients than the current standard of self-managed rehabilitation advice.

Post-Covid-19 syndrome, also known as "long Covid" or "long-haul Covid," is characterized by symptoms such as brain fog, exhaustion, and shortness of breath that persist for more than three months following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Several studies have shown that even at the low end of the scale, the expected number of COVID cases is in the millions. Long Covid treatments are currently limited to self-guided counseling in an outpatient setting, as described in the WHO pamphlet "Support for Rehabilitation: Self-Management after Covid-19-Related Illness."

In this study, researchers from the University of Murcia in Spain compared a supervised concurrent exercise approach, which is a combination of aerobic and strength training, to the self-guided brochure. For the study, groups of roughly 20 participants were randomly enrolled in one of four types of intervention exercise: supervised concurrent exercise, specialist breathing exercises, a mix of concurrent activity and breathing exercises, or self-guided efforts using the WHO pamphlet.

The findings of the study showed that more than 80% of the individuals in the concurrent exercise showed improvement in their condition after the intervention. Compared to the other groups, both concurrent training groups demonstrated higher improvement in long-term COVID symptoms. Additionally, the researchers also observed that patients in the concurrent group reported a decrease in their levels of weariness and despair with an increase in strength in the lower and upper bodies.
