According to a new report, more than half of the worlds population will be overweight or obese by 2035 if major actions are not taken. As per the data released by the Global Obesity Federation in its 2023 atlas, more than 4 billion people, or 51% of the worlds population, will be fat or overweight in the next 12 years.

The report showed that the rates of obesity are rising, particularly quickly among children and in countries with lower incomes. It showed that the rate of childhood obesity will more than double from the number recorded in 2020 to 208 million boys and 175 million girls by 2035, respectively. President of the Global Obesity Federation, Dr. Louise Baur, described the findings as a "clear warning" and urged governments to take immediate action to stop the issue from getting worse.

In a statement, she noted that the fact that childhood and adolescent obesity rates are rising the quickest is particularly concerning. Governments and politicians must take every precaution to prevent passing on the costs of health, social, and economic issues to the next generation. The federation revealed that the cost to society of the illnesses connected to being overweight will exceed $4 trillion annually by 2035, or 3% of the world GDP.

The authors of the report clarified that they were not condemning specific people but rather urging attention to the societal, environmental, and biological variables that contributed to the situation.
