According to a study being presented at the American College of Cardiologys Annual Scientific Session, the well-known weight-loss regimen, which has high amounts of fat and minimal carbohydrate, is linked to higher blood levels of "bad" cholesterol.

Moreover, it is associated with a twofold increased risk of cardiovascular events like angina, clogged arteries that need stenting, heart attacks, and strokes.

The study compared 305 participants and 1,220 people following a regular diet for analysis. Those on a keto-like diet exhibited significantly greater LDL cholesterol levels as well as apolipoprotein B (apoB), a protein that aids in the transport of fat and cholesterol through the body compared to those on a conventional diet.

After roughly 12 years of follow-up, the team discovered that people on a diet similar to keto had a more than two times higher risk of experiencing severe cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, strokes, peripheral arterial disease, and artery disease blockages that required stenting procedures.

Overall, 9.8% of those following the keto-like diet reported a new cardiac incident, compared to 4.3% of those following a regular diet, tripling their risk.

Researchers warned people and suggested consultation with any healthcare provider before starting an LCHF diet. It is advised that individuals check their cholesterol levels while on a diet and work to reduce other risk factors for heart disease or stroke, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, inactivity, and smoking.

The researchers pointed out that their study was observational, but more studies are needed to substantiate their findings merit.
