The recent move of the Telangana government to establish government medical colleges in every nook and cranny of the state was lauded by the Telangana chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The IMA chapter hailed the state government and stated that this bold move will help produce qualified doctors. It will also ensure improved access to quality medical care for all.

The IMA Telangana State president, Dr. B. N. Rao, stated that access to necessary medical treatment is often difficult for many families due to the high cost of private healthcare. Hence, the establishment of new government medical colleges will help increase the number of qualified doctors in the state. He explained that with an increased number of trained doctors in the state, issues of accessibility and affordability can be effectively addressed, which in turn will pave the way for improved healthcare standards across all settings.

Additionally, Dr. Rao emphasized the importance of addressing the lack of infrastructure and added that it is crucial to ensure that new facilities have enough funding and staff to uphold the high standards of instruction and training of the institution. He recommended that doctors be given training in family medicine, which will help them address minor health concerns, thereby reducing the burden on specialists, who are in limited supply.
