The world needs to be on track to cut sodium consumption globally by 30% by 2025, according to the World Health Organizations (WHO) Global report on sodium intake reduction. Most nations, including India, still need to enact obligatory sodium reduction laws, which the UN health organization claims puts people at risk for heart attacks, strokes, and other illnesses.

WHO suggests several sodium-related best buys policies, including lowering sodium content in food products, implementing front-of-pack labeling, running public awareness campaigns, and putting public food procurement and service policies into place to prevent cardiovascular disease and its associated costs.

WHO further stated that the world is consuming excess sodium-rich salt, which is bad for everyone′s health. The average daily sodium intake around the world is currently estimated to be 10.8 grams, which is more than twice the WHO recommendation of less than 5 grams, or one teaspoon, per day.

The agency generated a sodium country scorecard for the report based on the kinds and numbers of sodium reduction strategies each member state has in place. The scorecard shows which nations have committed to reducing sodium in their national policies (Score 1), which have implemented voluntary measures to do so or encourage consumers to choose healthier foods (Score 2), those that have mandated sodium content disclosure on pre-packaged foods and implemented at least one mandatory measure for sodium reduction (Score 3); and those that have implemented multiple mandatory measures for sodium reduction (Score 4). India scored 2, and only nine nations have a complete set of advised policies.
