The Mediterranean diet recommends vegetables, fruit, and three or more servings of fish each week, whereas the MIND diet places an emphasis on green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and collard greens.Little amounts of wine are advised by both the MIND and the Mediterranean diet.

An investigation into people′s adherence to the MIND and Mediterranean diets, as well as the impact of these foods on Alzheimers plaques and tangles, was recently published in Neurology.

581 individuals with an average age of 84 during the diet evaluation participated in the study and consented to donate their brains to dementia research after passing away. The study′s subjects passed away on average seven years after the study began, with 39% having dementia diagnoses and 66% fitting the description of Alzheimers disease.

This study examined the relationship between dietary data and Alzheimer′s disease (AD) pathology data from the autopsied subjects, including beta-amyloid burden, phosphorylated tau tangles, and overall AD pathology (summarised neurofibrillary tangles, neuritic and diffuse plaques).

Findings demonstrated that MIND and Mediterranean diets were related to decreased beta-amyloid burden and overall less AD pathogenesis.

The results were valid after additional adjustments for vascular disease burden, smoking, and physical activity. When people with mild cognitive impairment or dementia were eliminated from the baseline dietary survey, the correlations remained the same. Individuals who consumed the most green leafy vegetables showed less overall AD pathology than those who didnt.

Finally, it was seen that green leafy vegetables had an inverse relationship with AD pathology among dietary components. The MIND and Mediterranean diets caused lower beta-amyloid burden and other AD pathologies.
