Mutation in the insulin gene causes smaller pancreatic size in Type 1 diabetes

The new findings published in Diabetes Care revealed that people having Type 1 diabetes have a smaller pancreas than those without the disease. It is unexpected that the loss of beta cells in Type 1 diabetes would result in a smaller pancreas, as insulin-producing beta cells make up a minor portion of the pancreas.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have learned from the study of one Alabama family that insulin shortage is the primary cause of a noticeably smaller pancreas rather than the autoimmune condition associated with Type 1 diabetes.

In an effort to learn more about the illness, the family decided approximately 20 years ago that he and three of their six diabetic children would take part in research with just a blood test being done.

Eight people make up this family, and four of them were found to have monogenic diabetes caused by a rare mutation in the insulin gene that causes insulin insufficiency without autoimmune disease. The pancreas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that those with diabetes had shrunk and changed pancreatic shape. This was consistent with those previously seen in people with Type 1 diabetes.

Years later, they were shocked to learn from researchers that rather than having Type 1 diabetes, the four had monogenic diabetes caused by a mutation in the insulin gene.

This is the first time that researchers have conclusively shown that insulin plays a significant role in regulating pancreas size and that its absence causes a significantly smaller pancreas in humans.
